Consummate mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, Susan Stanton German, 81, died peacefully on June 14, 2023, in St. George, UT, after a long battle with respiratory conditions.
Sue was born November 4, 1941, in San Francisco, California. In 1959, she began her studies at the University of Wisconsin, where she earned her degree in education, met and married Jay German, her husband of 60 years, worked in her first teaching position, and began her family. After ten years, they moved for a short time to southern Illinois, then settled in Los Angeles for more than 45 years before moving to St. George.
In addition to heading her family, Sue was the innkeeper of her bed and breakfast in Los Angeles and provided staff support for legal and medical firms, also in Los Angeles.
When not providing her family unwavering love, care, and understanding, she pursued many interests including cooking with love, singing like an angel, volunteer work, knitting, gastronomy, and travel, especially foreign travel, visiting more than 100 countries.
Sue is survived by her husband, Jay; her daughters, Lisa McKendall and Lydia Smith of Boise, ID; her son, Charlie, of Los Angeles; and six grandchildren, Ben and Jack McKendall, Nathan and Matthew Smith, and Jessica and Zachary German.
A celebration of Sue’s life is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to American Rivers in Sue’s memory.
