Ruby Sophia Saurey Kinney, 97, passed away on January 31, 2020, in St. George, Utah. Ruby was born September 23,1922, at the family home in Hibbard, Idaho. She was the daughter of Heber Charles Saurey and Sophy Ricks Saurey.
Ruby was raised on a farm, the fifth of eight children. She graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg, Idaho, then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where she attended Henegar’s Business College and LDS Business School. She met her sweetheart, Kenneth W. Kinney, while working at Remington Arms. They were married on July 28, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together they were blessed with five beautiful children and spent 59 years together raising their family.
Ruby lived in Idaho, Utah, New York, Oregon, and North Dakota during her lifetime. No matter the circumstances, she made a home for family and friends in every situation. She loved to be home, often quoting to her kids, “There’s no place like home.”
Ruby loved to cook and was always trying new recipes. She enjoyed quilting, knitting and crocheting, seeing new places, playing games, watching hummingbirds, and was an avid Utah Jazz fan. She loved spending time with family and friends. She showed her great love for her family through her words and actions. Ruby was a wonderful, loving, friendly, compassionate woman who touched many lives and gave willingly to anyone in need. She epitomized kindness, charity, and service, often sharing something she had made for herself with others.
Ruby served in many church callings and especially loved working in the Primary; but her favorite calling was working with the Scouts. In her later years, while living in St. George, Utah, she did name extraction work with Ken. Following his passing, she volunteered in the St. George Temple and was also called to serve as a Church Service Missionary. She taught her children the importance of the gospel of Jesus Christ and lived by example.
Ruby is survived by her children, Bruce Kinney (Karen), Luann Daum (Roy), Sandra Hess (Willard), and Adele Stenquist (David). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, and a son, Ronald.
Following a stroke, in 2018, Ruby moved to Ridgeview Gardens in St. George. The family would like to thank the staff at Ridgeview Gardens and Canyon Home Care & Hospice for their kind, loving care and service.
