Rolaine Grant King, 82, died peacefully--yet on her own terms--at home on Friday, January 19, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
Rolaine was born October 20, 1941 to Sheldon B and Vada Prince Grant in Cedar City, Utah. That was the only opening day of the deer hunt that her father ever missed. She was a devout and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many leadership positions within the Church, but during her later years she especially enjoyed completing genealogy work for her ancestors.
Rolaine loved: a good book (especially one about Church history), sewing, thrifting, hiking, baking, New Harmony Heritage (a historical foundation she started to honor her beloved New Harmony), spending time with her family, and a Diet Coke with ice. The highlight of her later years was being able to serve her family in many capacities, including: taking care of her daughters while they were on bedrest during difficult pregnancies, moving in with her ailing father during the final years of his life up until his passing, and helping to care for her physically ill daughter. Rolaine's bright eyes, warm smile, compassion towards those in need, and mischieveous sense of humor will be missed by those who knew her.
She decided to pursue family life, rather than finishing up her art degree, as a young and handsome GI named Gordon Charles King stole her heart. Together they had three children. She and her husband worked for Hill Airforce Base, he as an aircraft mechanic and she as a secretary, until they moved down to New Harmony, Utah (Rolaine's hometown).
They divorced shortly thereafter and Rolaine got a job working for the US Geological Survey to support herself and her young children. As a single mother, Rolaine was a feminist who set a standard of strength for her daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters (one of which is her namesake) to follow as she bravely raised her children and stood on her own throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brother, Kerry Grant, and sister, Velda Grant. Rolaine is survived by: her sister-in-law Lana Grant; three children Daniel (Andrea) King; Teresa (Martin) Larson; and Lisa (Jason) Morrill; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Rolaine's memorial service is scheduled for 11 am on Saturday, February 10 at the New Harmony, Utah LDS Chapel. A visitation will precede the funeral service at 10 am on the same date and location. All are invited to come and join in a celebration of Rolaine's life.
