Roger Carver Bartlett

August 23, 1935 — December 3, 2023

St. George, Utah

Dr. Roger C. Bartlett, 88 passed away on Sunday December 3rd, 2023.  He was born August 23rd, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Elmer and Mary Comfort (Carver) Bartlett.  He married Evelyn Jean Fuller on March 21, 1958 in the Salt Lake City LDS temple.
Roger grew up in SLC, UT, attending South High School and then the University of Utah where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. Roger was an avid runner, competing on the University of Utah track team with a scholarship. During this time, Roger was a reservist in the US Army.  Roger later received a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University-Provo, in 1965 and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in Mechanical Engineering in 1975. Roger worked to support his family and went to school at night while earning his Ph.D.

Roger was an aerospace mechanical engineer who worked on the Apollo moon landing program rocket motors at Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, CA (West Hills, CA) where the family lived from 1964 until 1993. He worked at two other aerospace companies in Southern California before becoming a consulting engineer in 1976. He worked in a partnership and then eventually formed a successful independent consulting firm named Bartlett-Carver and Associates in 1993 which he ran until 2013. His son Allen now runs the business. Roger and Evelyn moved back to Utah, to St. George, in 1993 and he lived there the rest of his life.

Roger continued to be an avid, competitive runner until he was 68 years old, competing mostly in 5K races.  After not being able to run, he continued to work out regularly at the gym until around 2020 (85 years old). Roger was an avid skier for many years and loved to take his family skiing.  Roger and Evelyn owned a condominium in Brian Head Utah for many years, even before they moved to Utah, to facilitate family ski outings.

Roger and Evelyn loved to take the family camping, starting around 1966.  The family visited many National Parks in the west including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion, Rocky Mountain, Glacier, and other national parks.  In later years Roger and Evelyn camped both with family and by themselves with a camping trailer in various locations in Utah, Arizona, and California until around 2014. They loved the mountains and within the past decade purchased a cabin in Duck Creek Utah.  Evelyn would spend months up there in the summertime with Roger and by herself.

Roger loved his grand children, spending time with them camping, helping with Scouting projects, and attending sporting events.  He also employed willing grandchildren around the house in helping with home and yard work.  Roger and Evelyn both love Christmas time and made sure nearly every year, that there were abundant gifts for every child and grandchild and a celebration at their home.

Roger was active in the LDS Church serving in a number of callings and ordained to the office of High Priest.
Roger is survived by his wife Evelyn of St. George, UT, their 4 children and their 4 spouse: Roger and wife Machell, Allen and wife Kristina, Lisa and husband Jasher, and Dan and wife Shallyn, as well as 14 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren all of whom are still living.  His children and grandchildren/great-grandchildren live in Utah, California, Arizona, and Colorado, He is preceded in death by his father Elmer, mother Mary Comfort, Brother Bob, and sisters Marian, Evelyn, and Norma.
