Robert George Dunlap

January 30, 1957 — March 11, 2025

St. George, UT

Robert George Dunlap, our dearly loved husband, father, brother, step-father, grandfather, friend, neighbor, missionary, good samaritan, and servant was suddenly transferred to the presence of his Heavenly Father and Savior for future missions and angelic assignments on March 11th, 2025 from his mortal life in St George, Utah. Those left behind are mourning the loss of this noble and great man but the angels are simultaneously cheering to now utilize his great energy, exuberance, and light! And what a light it was! Rob had unmatched energy and drive, reaching out to every soul he met; the child, the teen, the young adult, the single, the married couple, the widowed, the orphaned, the foreigner, and the refugee. So many called him friend because he was a true friend to all. He loved his Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ first and foremost and was "all in" in the service of Him. He loved being an instrument in the Lord's hands and was a good Samaritan down to the final moments of his mortal probation and even beyond his death when he donated his organs so others might live on through him.

He was born January 30, 1957 to James Pendleton Dunlap Jr. and Margery Anne Schmucker in Salt Lake City, Utah but was raised in Spokane, Washington. His Dunlap Clan legacy will live on and be honored through his brother, Steven Charles of Boise, Id. (Penny) and sister Carole Anne George of Ivins, Ut., his sons Ryli, Breydi, Mori Dunlap of Minneapolis, Mn. and his daughter Kinzi Kunzler (Tom) of Burley Id.

Rob joined the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a young man while serving in the US Marines in Camp Pendleton, Ca. during non-wartime years. He then enlisted in God's army and served an honorable mission to Rome, Italy. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Curriculum Development. He married and raised his 4 children in Wyoming, Oregon, Texas, Nottingham, England, and Idaho Falls, Idaho. He served as a Bishop in The Colony, Texas and held many other church callings during his lifetime, some in tandem with his 2nd wife Allison, including full time missionary service, and as an ordinance worker in the St George Temple and Baptistry.

In 2007, he met his eternal companion "Alley" while riding his rusty bike on the greenbelt of the Snake River literally across the street of the Idaho Falls Temple. They were married civilly twice; once in 2008 and again in 2012 when he was rebaptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their marriage was sealed and solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple September 21, 2013. They chose this day to be their new anniversary as it was the beginning of their eternal life together in Tandemonium, their two seater bike, which was quintessentially the symbol of their marriage. They could never answer the question of how long they were married because it required math. The short answer is 17 years, which was entirely too short, unless you consider eternity, then their marriage sum is infinite and timeless.

Along with the "package deal" of a 2nd marriage came the addition of Alley's daughters that he loved as his own; Cassandra Barany (William) of Seattle, Wa., Madison Huerta (Franklin) Salt Lake City, Ut. Rachel Lake (Griffin) Vancouver, Wa. and Paisley Fox (Tyson) of Utah. A recent role Rob acquired in 2023 was that of Pop to his 3 adorable grandsons- Silas, Luke, and Leo, (and one more on the way) in addition to previously being Papa Rob to Zoey, Addi, and other step-grandchildren.

You knew Rob was around because he whistled while he worked and did everything with confidence, drive, and joi d'vive! He was known as one to drive big trucks and buses, tandem bike ride with Alley, take adventurous road trips, tie large items to the top of his car roof for trips to the dump, drive clunker cars and vans til they dropped, create gadgets, fix problems, collect notebooks, dig in the dirt, be handy with the tool and the rolling pin, make soup and sourdough bread, play guitar on the campfire level, write snail mail letters, practice calligraphy and cartoon doodling, never mind doing the dirty and unglamourous jobs. He was a sweeper, the kind who came early to set up and the last to sweep the floor when the event was over. He was a man's man in his skills and yet gentle and refined in his tastes, "occasionally pondering what made Shakespeare and Beethoven great". He was the unofficial greeter of his Mayberry neighborhood and GV3 ward with his sourdough bread, chicken soup for the sickly soul, and friendliness to all. He willingly fixed things for his widowed neighbors and put their garbage cans out weekly. We may never know all the secret service he performed for others because he was ever vigilant in looking for ways to help others and do good all his days. His life was simple but his joy made it abundant!

His longest act of service was a full-time 23 month mission with Alley. They were called to the India Bengaluru Mission but ended up serving the most diverse mission ever; first in the Church Headquarters mission 5 months while waiting for their visa, 6 months in Coimbatore, India and 6 months in Bengalore, India, 2 months in the country Timor Leste and 4 months in The Indonesia Jakarta Mission. They loved every phase of it, starting over and setting up a new household 5 times which he did masterfully and creatively. They made numerous lifelong friends everywhere they went. After returning home from that grand adventure, Rob cherished his time spent worshiping and serving daily and weekly in the House of the Lord in St George. He was scheduled for sealings and his evening shift just 2 hours before he was called home. But he died doing what he loved- digging in the dirt!
