Richard William Walster, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by his loving wife and five children. Born on November 9, 1942, Richard’s life equation can be summed up in one powerful formula: Family + Faith + Knowledge = a Legacy of Love and Wisdom.
A lifelong learner and mathematician, Richard was always seeking to understand the variables that make the world work. His academic journey included not one but three degrees from the University of Utah: a BS in Mathematics, a BS in Physics, and an MS in Mathematics. His passion for knowledge was more than just a career; it was the lens through which he viewed the world, full of wonder, patterns, and infinite possibilities.
Richard’s life was a series of interconnected variables, each grounded in love. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon Packer Walster, who was his partner in every equation, from the simplest to the most complex. Together, they raised five amazing children, each reflecting their combined values.
They are the constants in his life, and together, they formed a family whose love cannot be measured or quantified. Richard was also a proud father and grandfather, finding joy in the exponential growth of his family: 24 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy.
For Richard, faith was his foundation. His testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel never wavered. He served with kindness, always striving to “add” joy to others' lives. With his beloved wife, Sharon, they served two missions—one in the Knoxville, Tennessee Mission and another in Nauvoo—further deepening their faith and love for the gospel. They also served as temple workers in the Bountiful, St. George and Nauvoo Temples.
Richard’s favorite calculations didn’t involve numbers—they involved the moments he shared with those he loved. Whether exploring the outdoors or spending time with his grandchildren, Richard’s true passion was family.
He had an uncanny ability to make each grandchild feel like the most important person in the room. He always greeted them with a smile and said, “Do you know how awesome you are?” He had an equally delightful equation for his children he would ask: "Who needs a big hug?" His love multiplied with every embrace.
Richard’s legacy will continue to live on, not just in the memories of those who loved him but in the mathematical certainty that his faith, love, and service will continue to influence generations to come. Though his physical presence may no longer be with us, the infinite impact of his life and his testimony of eternal families will continue to resonate with his family and friends.
