Rex Martin Montgomery, age 84, passed away on December 3, 2024, at home in Leeds, UT. He was born on April 6, 1940, to Agnes Vilate Lindsay and Martin Lester Treaster in San Francisco, CA, and was later adopted by his stepfather, Willard Putnam Montgomery. He was married to his sweetheart, Carolyn Jarvis, for nearly 64 years.
Rex loved to fiddle with electronic devices from a young age and was curious enough to take apart the family’s brand-new television at the age of nine. From that point on, he was either studying electronics or practicing his piano. He excelled in physics and music throughout his teenage years and won a national award in physics at the age of 16. He also played piano in his jazz band at nightclubs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area before he was old enough to be legally allowed inside.
Rex enjoyed a career in physics in the aerospace industry in California before falling in love with Southern Utah. Eventually, Rex, Carolyn, and their family moved to Leeds, where they built a hexagon-shaped house—because, well, why not? He took on a second career as a piano tuner and loved to put on a little private concert after each piano he tuned. He also performed piano concerts in the tabernacle and enjoyed accompanying local performing artists.
Rex is survived by his wife Carolyn; 8 children; 21 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Lester Treaster and Agnes Vilate Lindsay; his stepfather, William Putnam Montgomery; and his half-brother, Donald Montgomery.
Visitation will be held at the Leeds LDS Chapel at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 7. The funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 A.M., with a short graveside service at the Leeds Cemetery afterward.
