Pamala S. Hyde

Pamala S. Hyde returned to heaven and the arms of her mother, father and husband this last week on May 5, 2024  after a very recent cancer diagnosis and a few short weeks of saying goodbye to loved ones and friends.

Pam was born Feb. 26, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Jean Crowther and Max Schmidt. She is the oldest sister to Kevin Schmidt (deceased) and Jan Bain.

Mom grew up in American Fork and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1967 as a spunky teenager.  She was a member of the Marching Pep Club and loved marching and performing at the sporting games as well as traveling with her family. In March of her Senior year she started cosmetology night school and graduated a year later as a licensed stylist. At the time, Mom had no idea how many haircuts with love she would give others in her lifetime.

In 1968 she married Tarlton Jay Blair. Pam and TJ were married for many years and raised five children together in Rochester, Minnesota and Provo, Utah: Jacoy, Kami, Kathan, Shiloh and Skyler. Pam and TJ later divorced.

During these childrearing years Mom spent time serving her family, helping in church callings, taking meals to neighbors, sewing countless Easter dresses and Halloween costumes, chauffeuring children to so many places she said she felt like a “taxi in a minivan”, helping with school activities, volunteering at the Provo Missionary Training Center and substitute teaching in Nebo School District. While living in Minnesota, the local LDS missionaries knew that Mom cut hair and enjoyed serving by offering the missionaries free haircuts. As a result, the Blair family met and loved missionaries from all over the world. 

Some of Mom’s favorite loves were reading mysteries, music, dancing, singing, chocolate in all forms, walks, aerobic exercising, and exploring the outdoors.  She learned to love camping eventually on those outdoor trips (she just never made peace with the fishing part). Mom enjoyed traveling and exploring new places that included Mexico, Argentina, Hawaii, Canada, the Caribbean and much of the contiguous United States - both east and west. She especially loved exploring the little hidden nooks and food places that were not as well known to tourists. Mom loved to cook, try new recipes and eat fabulous food. Some of her favorite days living in both Minnesota and Utah were those snowed in winter days with kids, a warm fire, and hot chocolate with marshmallows.

Re-entering the dating scene in the late 1990’s was not Mom’s favorite, but she was delighted to meet a man at one of the Provo singles dances who knew his way around a dance floor. They danced their way to the altar and on October 25, 1999, Pam and William Terry Hyde were married and then later sealed in the Provo, Utah temple.

Mom and Terry spent the next three years on an adventure, traveling the United States to visit their combined 15 children and seeing beautiful sights while living full time in their grand motor home. It was an experience that Mom loved. After years of taking care of a large home and yard, she enjoyed every minute of the ‘easy to clean’ and ‘take your house with you’ moments that the motor home allowed. The two of them eventually headed south to the St. George area and in 2006 bought a home in Hurricane, Utah. Mom discovered that southern Utah was her happy place with the warmth and red rocks. Then later, the two of them settled in Ivins, Utah.

Mom loved people. She enjoyed making new friends and starting up conversations with strangers everywhere she traveled. Whether it was in the grocery store, poolside, or standing in a national park, Mom was always ready and willing to meet someone new, get to know a little about them and then have a conversation about any topic. Her children knew that once Mom got talking, they’d better find something to do for awhile. Her children and family will miss the sparkle in her eyes when she was excited about a new idea, her laugh when we could catch her off-guard and her love for all people.
 
Pam leaves behind her five children: Jacoy (Jonathan) Baird, Kami (Joel) Christensen, Kathan (Laurie) Blair, Shiloh (Jonathan) Tomlinson, Skyler (Genevieve) Blair; ten stepchildren: Benjamin (Cait) Hyde, Amy (Dusty) Callister, Mindy (Kyle) Case, Matthew (Jessica) Hyde, Sarah (Scott) Reinwand, Jill (Mike) Bearden, Julie (Jason) Perry, Stephen (McKenzie) Hyde, Michael (Joslyn) Hyde, Emily (Abraham) Ivie ; 54 grandchildren ; 12 great-grandchildren; and countless friends who love her dearly. She graduates to heaven anxious to see her mother and father and her husband, Terry, who preceded her in death in 2022.
 
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, 9:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 240 East 1060 South, Ivins, Utah 84738. The family would like to thank Choice Home Health & Hospice, particularly Hailee, Nicole & Tricia, for their help in making Mom’s last days comfortable.
