Nola Alton

October 8, 1943 — March 29, 2024

St. George, UT

Nola Austin Alton(80), devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed on into the arms of our loving Heavenly Father the night of Friday March 29, 2024 at the home of her son surrounded by some of her family.

Nola was born on October 8, 1943 to Mathias Wells Austin and LoVina Ruth Larkin Austin at their home in Salmon Idaho. She was always cherished as the baby of the family. After her mom died when she was just 9 years old, her siblings took on the roll of watching out for Nola. She grew up very loved by her older siblings and their spouses and families whom cared for her until the end, calling her almost daily and paying her visits when they could and she always expressed gratitude for having such wonderful siblings and family. Nola considered family her greatest asset in life.

She graduated from Logan High school and went on to serve an LDS mission to the North Western States in North and South Dakota and Wyoming. She loved serving the people there and the Savior in this manner. After her mission she return to the SLC area to work. Her dad introduced a friend of his, Raymond Wesley Alton, to her and they struck up a romance that lead to marrying her sweetheart in the Manti Utah LDS temple on August 19, 1971. They made their home in Hurricane Utah, a community she grew to love and call home the rest of her life. She worked at Dixie College in the administrative offices while her and Ray tried to start a family. Nola lost 3 infants before she finally gave birth to her son Michael Ray Alton. He was her pride and joy. She was so grateful to be a mother and they shared a special bond. She was devoted and patient, fun and loving in what she considered her most important role in life. In turn, Mike cared for his mother the last few years of her life with the help of cousins and his wife and family.

Ray and Nola built a simple but beautiful life together. They often visited family when they could. Nola was dedicated to keeping in touch with family and felt those relationships were of high priority. After having Mike she soon left the college to work closer to home at Ace Hardware in Hurricane for many years. There she met many people whom became friends and dear associates. She was a dedicated employee. She was also a dearly beloved friend to many. She and Ray hosted many get togethers at their home for friends. She was easy to love and she did her best to make people feel seen and special, especially those who needed a friend.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints her entire life and loved the Lord with all her heart. Nola served in many capacities in church, but her favorite calling was working with the scouts in Cub Scouting. She loved working with the leadership and boys and loved the BSA program. If you didn't love scouting then she may have wondered about you.

Nola is survived by 2 sisters and 1 brother, Melva(Jack) Hill, Hyrum(Marlene) Austin, and Erma(Frank) Anderson. Her Son Mike (Gina) Alton of St. George UT. And her beautiful grandchildren Adam, Emily, Nick, Daniel, Jessica, and Cassidy Alton.

Nola was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Agnes Austin, Harriet(Art) Black, Joe(Rea) Austin, and Veda(Glen) Hill, husband Raymond, and daughter Cynthia.

Funeral services will be held Friday August 9th at 11 am at the Hurricane City cemetery under the direction of Hughes Mortuary.
