John David Whipple

October 4, 1941 — October 9, 2024

St. George, UT

John David Whipple, better known as “Whip”, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on October 9th, 2024, after a short battle with cancer.

Whip was born October the 4th, 1941 to Charles Ray Whipple and Alice Bradford Titus Whipple in St. George, Utah. Whip was the second of two children, born to a hard working family. He spent his life getting his hands dirty as an avid woodworker, car enthusiast, and all-around handyman. He was known for his patriotism and served honorably in the National Guard and Army Reserve. He continued his career in the service of his country as a Department of Defense contractor during the Cold War.

Whip and Trudy were married July 5, 1963, in Santa Clara, Utah. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the St. George Temple on May 28, 1966. He served faithfully in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including two assignments of missionary service with his wife Trudy in Salt Lake City, and Upstate New York. He also served as an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple, a calling which he loved dearly.

Those who know Whip are familiar with his demeanor. He was well known for his ability to make friends at the drop of a hat. He was a talented storyteller and seemed to know everyone in his hometown of St. George.

He is survived by his wife Trudy, his six children and spouses, Shelly and Todd Pryor, Darrick and Karen Whipple, Jason and Malinda Whipple, Jeff and Stephanie Whipple, Adam and Nicole Whipple, Cortney and Steve Garrett, and his sister Carol Ann Anderson. His legacy lives on in 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, which he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Roger Anderson, parents-in-law, Earl and Lola Tobler, and brother-in-law Emerson McOmber.

A viewing will be held on Monday, October 21st at 9:00am with funeral services following at 11:00am. The viewing and services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 415 North Westridge Dr, in St. George.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Aid Fund.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Applegate Home Health and Hospice for their tender care of Whip. Additionally, appreciation is extended to Hughes Mortuary, and the many friends and family which have offered their love and support.
