St. George, Utah – Gail Brownstein, passed away Thursday June 24, 2022. She was born January 29, 1943, to Philip and Evelyn Drazen. She married Samuel Michael Brownstein at the Oxford Circle Jewish Community Center in Philadelphia, PA in 1965.
Gail was born in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia, moving after her father returned home from the Pacific Theater of World War Two to the Oxford Circle section of Northeast Philadelphia. There she was raised on Unruh Avenue, a place that she loved and always cherished. She attended Northeast High School where she met her close circle of friends that she remained in contact with for many years. After high school she studied phlebotomy at Graduate Hospital, eventually working at Lankenau Hospital. In 1963, she was introduced to her future husband Sam, on the beach in Atlantic City NJ by a mutual friend.
Their three boys, Matthew, Marshall, and Michael, were raised in Huntingdon Valley, Pa. During that period, she was very active as a mother, participating in school activities and working in the field of marketing research. After raising her sons, she moved to Yardley, PA where she spent her free time volunteering for the sisterhood of Congregation Beth El and later visiting her grandchildren. In 2014, Sam and Gail made the tough decision to leave the Philadelphia area to be full time grandparents in Saint George, Utah. There, they spent their remaining time making new friends, enjoying their beautiful new surroundings, and of course spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren living nearby.
Those who knew Gail remember her closely following the afternoon soap operas and watching them late into night. She loved to talk with friends and spent many evenings on the phone catching up on news of their families.
She is survived by her three sons, Matthew (Susan, Cleveland, OH), Marshall (Karen, Sellersville, PA), Michael (Rebecca, St George, UT), sister Linda Drazen (Meg, New Haven, CT), and five grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Samuel, and her parents, Philip and Evelyn Drazen.
