Alice Welti Buehner

July 30, 1931 — May 12, 2023

St. George

Alice Welti Buehner, of St. George, Utah passed away May 12, 2023, at the age of 91, from natural causes. Alice was born July 30, 1931, in Logan, Utah to Jeanne Leslie Tovey and Walter Welti.  On August 18, 1954, Alice married Donald Lanphier Buehner in the Salt Lake City Temple.  They are the wonderful parents of 5 sons and 1 daughter.

Alice had a magical childhood growing up in Logan, Utah. She was raised with talented, devoted  parents and 3 older siblings, which included her brothers Walt and Bob, and her sister June. The Welti home was filled with music, laughter, and love.

Alice attended Utah State University where she graduated in Home Economics and later went on to get a Master’s Degree in Communications from Brigham Young University.

Throughout her life, Alice had many accomplishments.  One of her most significant accomplishments was becoming Mrs. America in 1965.  She won the hearts of judges and audiences with her beauty, talent, and grace. She used her platform to promote the importance of education, love of country and to inspire other women to pursue their dreams.  All the while, maintaining that: “No success can compensate for failure in the home”.

Alice has a deep love for the gospel of Jesus Christ.  She served in many different capacities for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  She and Don served for 6 years on Salt Lake Temple Square in Public Relations, and as tour guides while Don was a counselor in the Temple Square presidency.  In 1992, Don and Alice were called to serve in the Hawaiian Temple Visitor’s Center. While in Hawaii, they were called to be Mission President of the Boise, Idaho Mission, from 1992-1995.

Salt Lake City was home for most of Alice’s married life, except for twelve years in Heber Valley, where the Buehner family enjoyed fun, farm life and hard work.  For many years, Don and Alice spent the winter months in Palm Desert, California.  In 2011, they made St. George, Utah their permanent home.

Alice filled her life with many interests including water skiing, snow skiing, scuba diving, tennis, pickle ball, oil painting, writing, playing the piano and singing.

Alice’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.  She was an unconditionally loving mother and grandmother.  She was also a devoted friend to all who knew her.  She is greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Alice is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lanphier Buehner, and granddaughter, Cesca Alice Buehner.  Alice is survived by Dale E. Buehner (Desire), Gary W. Buehner (Susan), Jeffrey D. Buehner (Joni), Lisa K. Richards (Lance), Robert M. Buehner (Breka), Donald J. Buehner (Susan) and brother Walter Welti. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 11:00 am, at the LDS church building located on 82 North Dixie Drive, St. George, Utah.  A viewing will be held prior to the services at 9:30 am.  Interment will take place in the Tonaquint Cemetery located in St. George, Utah at 1777 S. Dixie Drive.
