Alan Lee Jones Jr. died peacefully of natural causes surrounded by his family on January 10, 2025 at the age of 93.
Alan was born on December 24, 1931, in Columbus, Ohio, to Allan Lee Jones, Sr. and Martha Gray Jones. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. While stationed in France, he was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized in Paris—a decision that shaped the course of his life. After completing his military service, he served a mission for the Church in California.
Alan graduated from Ohio State University in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he met Verla Mecham. The two were married on September 28, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple and went on to build a loving family together, raising eight children.
Alan worked for Beneficial Life Company and devoted his life to his faith and family. He served diligently in numerous callings within the Church and later as an ordinance worker at both the Jordan River and St. George temples. Alongside his wife, he served missions in Washington, D.C. and Cove Fort, Utah. He was generous with his time and resources, giving often to those he encountered in need.
A talented athlete, Alan was active throughout his life. He played on the Ohio State Golf team and participated in the NCAA Championships in 1960. He finished over thirty marathons, including the Deseret News and St. George Marathons. In his later years, he participated in many events during the annual World Senior Games in St. George, Utah.
Alan found joy in productivity. He fearlessly tackled home repair and improvement projects. He spent countless hours researching his genealogy, compiling invaluable records for his posterity. He wrote poetry and a hymn to express his faith, leaving behind works reflecting his thoughtful and artistic spirit.
Alan is survived by his wife of 63 years Verla Jones; his children Leslie Memmott (Kay), Pam Price (Mike), Cindy Moss, Curtis Jones (Leesa), Roger Jones (Cari), Jackie Mellor (Pete), Jennifer Jones, and Jessica West; thirty grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren; and his sister Marilyn Gray-Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Bob Jones; his sister Diane Silver; and one great-grandson.
Alan’s legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire those who knew him. The memory of his infectious laugh and humor will linger and may it bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
Memorial Services will be held at the River Ridge Ward building, 2434 East Riverside Drive in St. George, Utah, on February 7, 2025 at 2:00 pm. Alan was laid to rest at Tonaquint Cemetery by his family.
